Car Parking

The University has a car park management system at both the Edgbaston and Selly Oak sites.  Please make yourself aware of the  University of Birmingham's Traffic Regulations  Any vehicle that contravenes these regulations regarding vehicles on campus may be issued with a parking charge.  

No vehicle should be parked in a prohibited location at the University. The following areas would be classed as prohibited parking and unauthorised parking will incur a charge of £60, which will be reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.

• Parking outside of a marked bay;
• Parking in disabled bays without displaying a valid blue badge;
• Parking on double yellow lines;
• Parking on double red lines;
• Parking on the pavement or walkways;
• Parking on grass verges;
• Parking in loading bay areas;
• Double parking;
• Parking in keep clear/yellow hatched areas; and
• Parking in any area which causes obstruction or limited access to other users.

Please note that all car parking charges, in all locations, apply between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Fridays.

Access to barriered areas of campus is controlled by using your Staff ID card.  If you are encountering a problem with access via your card please e-mail us at carparking@bham.ac.uk so that we can investigate.  We need to ensure that the barrier intercoms are used as a last resort should you encounter a problem with your ID card. Unnecessary use puts a strain on Security resources especially at peak times.
Any change to your ID card version number must also be advised to us so that we can update the car parking database.

Car Parking charges are applicable between 08.00am and 18:00pm Monday to Friday. 

Parking is based on a first come, first served basis. All staff parking on campus should be in possession of a valid parking permit at all times.

Some dedicated parking provision is made for disabled users. Disabled staff are entitled to free access to the campus; valid blue badges must be clearly displayed. Please complete your registration details on the Option 1 form below and upload a copy of both sides of your blue badge (you will not be required to complete the payment section).

 Please advise us of any change to your registered vehicle details or your personal details by completing an Amendment form. 

If you have a hire / courtesy or loan car that is not your registered vehicle you must advise carparking@bham.ac.uk so that the registration number can be added to our approved list for a temporary period.  Please do not leave notes in your vehicle as these are not valid. 

 Please note that Chancellor's Court, Hills Car Park and the Medical School Forecourt are restricted parking areas accessible to specifically authorised users only.  Your ID card will operate the barriers at these car parks only if you have been granted special access.  Blue Badge holders will have free access to these areas.

Honorary Staff permits are available via application for our North East multi storey car park and Pritchatts Park Village car park.  All Honorary staff will need to ensure that they display a valid parking permit. 

There will be 2 permit options available:

• Option 1
  A 6 month pay in advance permit £125 (purple permit) - this will allow the permit holder to park in the above named car parks without the necessity to purchase a daily ticket or RingGo session.  To apply for Option 1 please
  visit the University's on-line shop.   Once we have received your application and confirmed your honorary status we will process your application for postal to the address on the e-mail receipt.

• Option 2
  Pay & Display only permit (orange permit) - this will permit the holder to park in the above named car parks for £1 per day.  Payment can be made in cash at the machine or you can pay via the RingGo mobile app, please ensure that you pay for your session on arrival on campus. The location code for UoB permit holders is 15690

To apply for permit option 2 please complete the Parking Application Form .

Access for disabled blue badge holders will remain the same whereby the individual can continue to park on main campus free of charge.  Please complete the Staff application form Option 1 in the 'Staff Parking' section above and attach a copy of your disabled badge.   

Applications for the 2022/2023 Academic Year are now being accepted.

Parking availabilty for students at the University of Birmingham is extremely limited and therefore we ask that students travel to campus via other means.  If you feel that bringing your car is absolutley your only option then you can apply for a student permit but will only be eligible if you match one or more of the criteria as set out below.

• You are a Blue Badge holder (please upload a copy of your valid blue badge with your application)
• Your term time address is over 10 miles away from the University
  The address given on your application must match the term time address registered with Student Services and therefore showing on your student record.  (Applications will not be processed if either the addresses don't match or the Term Time address section of your student record is left blank, this section must be completed for your application to be considered).  To complete your term time address enter the my.bham portal;  my.programme page; Register; at the bottom left of the page your will find Address Details, select and click the down arrow to choose Term Time address type, complete your term time address and submit.   Proof of address may be requested.
• You have dependents of primary school age 11 or under who live with you at your term time address and that address is over 3 miles away from the University.  Students with dependent children who live within a 3 mile radius will not be granted a permit.   Please upload a copy of your childs birth certificate or a child benefit letter.  
• You are are registered as a carer to disabled family members at their permanent home address 
  Please upload any relevant documentation that supports your application such as a carer registration document from your local authority or other relevant documentation that evidences your carer status.

If you meet the above criteria and wish to apply for a University student permit please submit the on-line form below:

Should we need to contact you for more information and there is no repsonse received within 2 weeks the application will be deleted.

Permits are issued for an academic year or part thereof and must be re-applied for on an annual basis.

If you have an ongoing medical condition that requires you to bring a vehicle to campus but you are not a blue badge holder you will need to make an appointment to see Student Services for an an assessment.

The applicant should be aware that by bringing a vehicle onto University property you agree to abide by it's
Traffic Regulations, this includes the issue of financial parking charges for unauthorised parking.

 
Where Can I Park?

Students who are issued with an approved permit are permitted to park in the following areas only:   

The Vale,  B15 3SR and Tennis Courts,  B15 2RE (student residence areas)   
North East Multi Storey Car Park, Floors 1-5 only (Pritchatts Road, B15 2SA)  No access on the ground floor level as this is reserved for Edgbaston Hotel guests only.
Pritchatts Park Village, Pritchatts Road (B15 2QX)   Please note this area is currently a construction site so available bays are limited.

Selly Oak Campus  - pay & display areas only at Johnston car park and George Cadbury Hall
(Students are not permitted access to the University School , OLRC and SOVAC).   

Please note that the car parks shown above are all pay and display/pay by mobile at £1 per day for student permit holders.  Payment either in cash at a pay & display machine or pay on arrival via the RingGo mobile app - details below.

No cash, register with RingGo to pay via your credit/debit card via your mobile phone (see below for further details).  The location code for student permit holders in the car parks shown above is 15690

A valid green student permit is required in all areas above

Charges apply Monday to Friday 8.00am -  6.00pm year round (NB: charges are still applicable during non-term time) 

Students who are not granted a parking permit should not bring their vehicle to campus during core hours. 
To register for Out of Hours Parking only  -   4.30pm - 11:59pm Mon-Fri and all day at the weekend please send an e-mail to carparking@bham.ac.uk advising your Student ID and Vehicle Registration Number.     

Students are not permitted access to the main campus prior to 4.30pm, if you do park on campus before this time our enforcement officers may issue a financial penalty ticket.
Once registered Blue Disabled Badge holders can park on the main campus free of charge  please ensure your Blue Badge is clearly displayed.

 Visitors are encouraged to travel to campus via public transport wherever possilbe.  The University has a train station directly on site.  If you do need to bring a vehicle to campus, visitor parking is available at the location below:

Parking at the University of Birmingham is free of charge after 6.00pm Mon - Fri and is free all day at weekends.

Visitors who require access to the main campus for business purposes should contact the department they are visiting to request a permit which should be hung from the rear view mirror of their vehicle. 

Please be advised that enforcement procedures are in place in all University parking areas and penalty charge notices will be issued to all vehicles that fail to comply with University Traffic Regulations.

Staff wishing to access our EV Charging points should download the BP Pulse app available on the App Store or Google Play.  You can choose to either sign up on a PAYG basis or you can apply to be a Member and pay a monthly subscription.  As a BP Pulse Member you will benefit from a cheaper price for charging.  The pricing difference can be viewed at https://network.bppulse.co.uk/pricing

If you are not a smartphone user then you can still sign up as a BP Pulse Member via their website, once registered you will be sent a membership card for use in accessing the charging points.

We currently have 7 charging points, locations are:

North East Multi Storey car park  - 2 chargers located at the roof level
Beech House (05) - within the Edgbaston Park site close to the exit onto the Bristol Road  - 1 charger
The Running Track car park (opposite the Teaching & Learning building)  -  4 chargers

 RingGo is a quick, easy to use mobile phone service, which lets you pay for your parking with a credit or debit card rather than using cash at a machine.  When you park your car in an area featuring the RingGo service you simply contact RingGo by Smartphone app, calling, SMS or on-line, and pay for your parking.

With RingGo:

• You no longer need to carry change
• You don't have to visit a parking machine and
• You don't need to walk back with a parking ticket - Parking Attendants check which vehicles have paid to park via this method using their handheld units.

How do I register with RingGo?

You can pre-register with RingGo either by using the RingGo smartphone apps (downloadable free of charge via your handset or on the internet at www.myRingGo.co.uk/register

You will be asked to provide :

• The number plate, colour and make of your vehicle
• Your payment card details

Alternatively you can regsiter at the same time you want to park, either by using the RingGo apps or by calling the RingGo number which is 0203 046 0060

Once registered RingGo recognises your mobile phone number and retrieves information you have given previously. This means that when you pay you only have to provide:  

• The five digit location code where you are parked.  Signs will be fixed to our pay & display machines displaying the location code.  If you are a University permit holder and therefore eligible to park for £1 a day please ensure you use the correct location code (15690).   This will be shown in smaller font than the visitor/nonpermit holder code.
• Non permit holders will be classed as a visitor and will be subject to visitor parking charges. The location code for non-permit holders  is 15677.   Please see our Visitor section for current costs.
• The length of time you want to park
• Your payment card 3 digit security code
• All RingGo users MUST ensure that their daily session is purchased prior to or on arrival.

How much does RingGo cost?

There is no charge for registering with RingGo and no charge for using the smartphone applications.
Optional parking session confirmation and reminder texts (alerting you when your session is about to run out) cost 10p per message.  These are not mandatory and can be switched off as part of the registration process or anytime thereafter if you do not require them.

Benefits of RingGo for Visitors  -  extending your parking session

If you want to extend your stay you can remotely 'top up' your parking fee, simply contact RingGo again and the service will ask you:

• How long you want to extend
• What your card security code is

Can I get a VAT receipt?

If you need a VAT receipt you can view and print in on-line by logging in at www.myRingGo.co.uk

Due to the Pandemic the Car Share scheme has been suspended until further notice, bays are therefore available for general parking.

The University now has 49 priority car parking spaces in use for staff who are registered ub.liftshare members.

Spaces that are not occupied by 10:00am will become available for general parking.     

Once registered with Liftshare you will then need to find a car sharing partner and form a team on the system.  Once you have  set up a 'Liftshare' team you can print your QR code permit via the 'Liftshare team' tab.  If you do not have access to a printer please email carparking@bham.ac.uk with your details and office location who will then print and put in the internal mail.

If you are already a registered member then you will also need to set up a Liftshare team as above.

Car Sharing Protocol 

• When using the designated car share spaces on campus you must display an authenticated Liftshare QR code permit on the dashboard that is visible and can be scanned by our traffic officers.
• You must also display a valid UoB parking permit 
• You should not park in the designated car sharing spaces when not car sharing.
• Please Note: Enforcement action including Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) may be taken if the designated car share spaces are not used correctly.
