Alumna and local MP, Jess Phillips, returns to the University to share her experience of responding to social media trolls
Alumna and MP for Birmingham Yardley, Jess Phillips, is returning to the University of Birmingham on Friday 18th January to share her experiences of responding to social media trolling.
The event, part of a programme of work to support female academics to use social media to amplify their research and engage with the public, will see Jess join Dr Jagbir Jhutti-Johal, Senior Lecturer in Sikh Studies to share their experiences of using social media when discussing topical issues online as part of their roles.
The event will feature a panel discussion at the end with Jagbir, Jess and Professor Una Martin, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equalities, where attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions.
The event will take place between 12:00 – 13:00 on Friday 18th January 2019 in G12 in University House.
Commenting ahead of the event, Jess Phillips, MP for Birmingham Yardley, said:
“Online trolling is not just one of those things we have to put up with, it silences women’s voices, it frightens teenagers alones in their room at night, it allows for the spread of hate speech and dangerous ideals. It’s not one of those things it is dangerous and anyone who has sufferers knows that.”
