Move-out checklist: 7 things you shouldn't forget at the end of term

As the academic year comes to an end, many students across UoB are preparing to move out — and with deadlines, packing, and future plans all at once, it’s easy to forget the basics. Here’s a quick checklist of what not to miss before you leave your uni home:

1. Take all your belongings

It sounds simple, but many students often leave behind chargers, clothes, or food in the fridge. Most Tenancy Agreements require you to remove all your belongings, failing to do this could result in you covering any extra costs for the landlord to remove them. Do one last sweep of every room and cupboard before you go.

2. Clean your room

Make sure surfaces are wiped, floors are vacuumed, and everything is left tidy. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should be in a reasonable condition.

3. Empty and clean the fridge

Don’t leave food behind. Clear everything out and give it a quick wipe to avoid smells or hygiene issues. If you have long-life perishables, why not help other students in need by donating them to The Guild’s Community Pantry?

4. Take the bins out

Leaving full bins in your property is one of the easiest ways to get charged. Make sure all rubbish is taken out before you leave.

5. Check the proper before leaving

Lights and heating off? Windows closed and locked?

Look out for any marks on walls, stains, or anything broken. These can lead to deposit deductions if not sorted. Make a note of any damage and take photos – preferably with a timestamp added to them.

Bonus tip for future move-ins: if there is damage when you first move in, make sure you have proof (like photos) so you’re not held responsible when moving out.

6. Take final meter readings

Take photos of your final gas, electric, and water meter readings and submit them to your utilities provider if needed.

7. Donate what you don’t want to keep

Instead of throwing things away, you can donate unwanted items through Junkbusters. The scheme, run with the Guild of Students, helps raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Collection points are set up around Selly Oak during move-out season. You just need to bag items and drop them off —can check the Junkbusters webpage for collection dates and times.

With move-out season approaching, staying organised and planning ahead can make for a smoother move-out. Tackle this checklist and you’ll avoid unnecessary stress — and extra costs!

If you have any questions or concerns about moving out of your accommodation, the Guild’s advice team are there to help.
