Heading home for spring vacation? Don't forget to secure your place before you go!
If you’re heading home to spend spring break with family and friends, remember to take a few simple steps to keep your accommodation secure:
1. Lock up properly
Make sure all doors and windows are locked before you leave. If any locks feel loose or not very secure, contact your landlord and ask them to upgrade them. For extra peace of mind, you can also pick up free window and door alarms from the Community Safety Hub. They’re a simple way to deter burglars and alert you if someone tries to get in.
2. Keep valuables out of sight
Try to take valuable items like laptops, phones, and jewellery home with you. If you’re leaving them behind, store them somewhere secure such as locked drawers or cupboards. It’s also worth checking that your belongings are covered by insurance, just in case.
3. Check outdoor access points
Don’t forget to lock garden gates and make sure fences are secure. These can sometimes be easy entry points for intruders if left open or damaged.
We want you to have a safe and enjoyable student experience. If you have any questions or concerns, speak to your Guild Safety Wardens or drop by the Community Safety Hub, open Monday–Friday, 10:00–16:00, at the North Gate Lodge at the top of the Green Heart.
