Women's History Month spotlight: how UoB alumni are challenging gendered violence

This Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting Daz and Martha, two University of Birmingham alumni who are using art and technology to tackle gendered violence—a topic that directly affects women every day. Their social enterprise, Calico, shows how creativity can not only raise awareness but also create practical solutions to make communities safer for women and girls.

Founded in April 2022, Calico uses theatre, film, and virtual reality to spark conversations and drive real change. It all started with their short film Curfew, created during their final year at UoB. The film asked young women: “What would you do if men had a curfew?” Their responses were brought to life in public spaces around Birmingham, sparking discussions that are still resonating today.

Now, Calico’s work reaches even further. Their CurfewVR virtual reality tool lets participants experience life as a woman navigating Birmingham at night, helping police and security teams understand the everyday precautions women take to stay safe. Since its launch, they’ve trained over 200 officers, including West Midlands Police and British Transport Police.

Calico’s projects are built from community voices with workshops, focus groups, and interviews shaping every campaign. Students can get involved through co-creation sessions, workshops, internships, or their soon-to-launch Youth Board, which gives young creatives a say in running Calico.

Daz and Martha say their motivation comes from the real impact of their work: “Hearing participants say they will use what they’ve learnt both professionally and personally reminds us why we do this.”

For students wanting to campaign for women’s safety, their advice is simple: “See what’s already out there, collaborate, and don’t be afraid to get creative.”

Want to get involved? Keep an eye out for Calico’s upcoming Youth Board applications or reach out to them by emailing info@wearecalico.co.uk, join a workshop, or help co-create a project—and use your creativity to make a real difference this Women’s Month.
