Hey everyone, I’m Savannah, a now third year UoB student studying Psychology, and one of the Student Content Shapers. Over the last few years, I’ve come to realise that going to university is so much more than just earning a degree.

It’s a transformative journey filled with valuable life lessons, lifelong friendships, and self-discovery.

Here are my top five lessons learned as a university student, along with some friendly tips to help you make the most of your own university experience.

1. Embrace growth and change

Being at university is a time of personal growth and change. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. I never thought I’d like writing blogs but here I am today writing you guys one! Try and join different clubs and societies – there are so many out there. It’s through these experiences that you’ll discover hidden passions, develop new skills, and make connections that can shape your future.

Tip – Challenge yourself to say “yes” to opportunities that come your way. You never know where they might lead you!

2. Time management is key

Time management is your best friend in overcoming balancing uni work, social life, and part-time work and  to avoid getting too overwhelmed. Prioritise your tasks, try and set realistic goals, and create a study schedule that works for you. Remember, university doesn’t have to be just about studying, but also spending time relaxing and having fun – this is important for your wellbeing.

Tip – Use a diary to stay organised either physical to scribble on or an online one!

3. Seek support

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. University can sometimes feel overwhelming, and that’s completely normal. Reach out to your professors, and lecturers if you’re struggling with anything that impacts your studies. You can also seek support from university resources such as Wellbeing Officers, UB Heard – UoB’s 24/7 confidential listening and support service, or study groups. Remember you’re not alone on this journey, and there are people ready to support you every step of the way.

Tip – Build a network of friends and course mates who can help you and share study tips.

4. Stay curious

University is an incredible opportunity to expand your knowledge and broaden your horizons. Whether that’s through different societies and groups on campus, the city and what it has to offer, learning new skills through the various opportunities available, such as being a Student Content Shaper, or getting involved in the various events and activities outside of your course throughout the year. Stay curious and explore!

Tip – Take advantage of the free resources and/or events we have here at UoB. Keep an eye on your emails and socials to find out about these!

5. Enjoy the journey

University is a unique time in your life that’ll be filled with unforgettable memories. Cherish the friendships you make, the late-night study sessions and the moments of self-discovery. I can’t stress how important it is to take regular breaks and have fun along the way. Remember, this chapter of your life is about growth, learning and creating lasting memories.
