Housing scam targeting students

There have been reports of students being targeted by people requesting substantial amounts of money in relation to renting a property. A scam is a scheme designed to cheat you out of your money.

In this scam a company is set-up and the owners then approach students claiming to be working on behalf of landlords. They aim to get students to send them their rent money instead of sending it to the landlord directly. The company will then keep the money leaving the student owing rent to the landlord.

The University has been made aware of the following names used for the companies:

  • Homplus Ltd,
  • Homplus (Uk) Information Technology Ltd
  • Inlife Information Technology Limited

If you are approached by any of these please do not pay any money and seek further advice.

If you think you might have been a victim of fraud, please contact West Midlands Police by calling 101, you can also report a crime online

International students can also contact the International Student Team (IST) for advice.

Before you sign up for accommodation or pay anything it is important that you are 100% sure it is genuine, if you are ever unsure then you can contact Guild Advice for housing support.

More information on how to avoid scams and what to do if you fall victim to one, can be found on the advice on scams intranet page.
