Staff and students to celebrate UoB Xtra

UoB Xtra_2

You are invited to join our student community next month in unwinding with UoB Xtra from Monday 3 June to Friday 21 June.

UoB Xtra is designed to celebrate the end of summer term, helping students destress from the pressures of assessments and revision, connect with others and learn new skills.

Taking place across campus, we are delighted to share that many events are free and open for staff to attend. Whether you’re interested in the Green Heart open air cinema or intrigued to listen to TEDx-style talks from academics here at Birmingham, there is something for everyone.

3k Your Way – Wednesday 5 June, 12:00-16:00

The Campus 3k is a highlight of UoB Xtra, with students and staff coming together to promote active wellbeing.

The route will start at the Green Heart and finish by Old Joe.

It doesn’t matter if you’re donning your trainers for the first time, a seasoned runner, or simply taking a stroll with your colleagues – it is open to all abilities, and anything goes!

Entries close on Friday 31 May and the community spirit and fancy dress is not one to miss.

The Campus 3k event will impact on access to the University Ring Road and to vehicles parked on the centre of campus earlier on the day. Access to campus will be paused between 13:45 and 15:00 and vehicles will not be able to drive on campus roads used by the event. If you need to access your vehicle during this time (e.g. to leave campus) then we recommend parking in one of the car parks that fall outside of the route (e.g. West Car Park, South Gate or the North East multi-storey).

Green Heart open air cinema – Monday 3 June to Friday 7 June, 15:00-21:00

Grab your popcorn! Expect comedy, action, animation blockbusters from the week-long Green Heart Open Air Cinema.

There will be a schedule of films being shown from 15:00-21:00 each day, and the best part is that it is completely free.

Unwind with your colleagues after work and make the most of the food vans selling popcorn and hotdogs. Check the event schedule to find a film that suits everyone.

The Nature of Our Future – Monday 10 June, 11:00-12:30

Hear from Dr David Tickner, chief advisor for Rivers and Water at WWF, who will discuss ‘The Nature of Our Future Sustainability'.

Dr Tickner will be sharing what actions need to be taken to safeguard our biodiversity against the threat of climate change and how the academic community can support and advocate for the changes needed to address this global crisis.

Be sure to register so you don’t miss out!

TEDx-style talks – Wednesday 12 June, 9:30-16:00

The Teaching and Learning building will be hosting a series of TEDx-style talks. Get answers to the big questions in these 'Ten Talks' from University academics and well-known speakers including Sir Anthony Seldon, Hannah England and Nazir Afzal OBE.

Topics will range from corporate digital responsibility to combating the threat of infectious diseases, and exploring past societies and climate change.

Whether you want to sign up for just one session or all three, it is open to all staff and is a fantastic opportunity to get involved on the debate.
