Assessment (Re-)Design 'Swap Shop'

Old Gym LG12

Assessment re-design2

The rapid rise in the availability and sophistication of generative AI tools provides a timely opportunity to rethink our assessment and feedback practices. In addition to considering how such tools might be used to enhance student learning and graduate skills development, we need to rethink our assessment practices to ensure these are appropriate in determining whether the learning outcomes of our programmes are being successfully achieved by students in a generative AI-enabled world.

To support colleagues across the University who wish to better understand the implications of generative AI for their assessment practice, and to consider how assessments and assignments might be designed in response to mitigate some of the potential challenges, we are organising a series of ‘Assessment Re-(Design) ‘Swap Shops’ over summer 2023. These informal in-person workshops provide an opportunity for colleagues to discuss their assessments and assignments with like-minded colleagues, with a view to gaining advice and guidance from those who might be more familiar with the role that generative AI might have within higher education in the future, and with the intention that individuals leave the workshop with clear ideas and approaches that they can implement within their teaching in 2023/24. Due to their necessarily interactive nature, and that it is expected the sessions will consist of elements involving smaller working groups, these workshops are offered in-person only.

If you wish to attend, you are asked to sign-up in adance ia the Eentbrite and share a brief indication of the type(s) of assessment where you would welcome help and support by responding to this post.

Ahead of the workshop you are encouraged to email, in advance, a single PowerPoint slide summarising your assessment no later than a week before the session date to Mark Hancock (– this will help in planning the event and in ensuring the maximum time within the session is spent working on (re-)designing our assessments and assessment practices.

Should you have any questions or queries in advance, please contact either Michael Grove or Mark Hancock. We look forward to seeing you there.
