The Postgraduate Research Almanac

An exciting new exhibition celebrating postgraduate research at the University of Birmingham

From 29 November until 4 December 2023, Westmere House will be home to The Postgraduate Research Almanac, a new exhibition spotlighting the work of University of Birmingham postgraduate researchers (PGRs).

Almanac (noun) : An annual table, or (more usually) a book of tables, containing a calendar of months and days, with astronomical data and calculations, ecclesiastical and other anniversaries, and other information, including astrological and meteorological forecasts.

Inspired by the concept of an almanac – an annual table or book listing anniversaries, forecasts, and astronomical calculations – this exhibition uses the calendar year as its theme and organizing structure to showcase exciting research at the University of Birmingham.

PGRs across the university have created exhibits linking their research with significant dates. Every year, an enormous number of issues and occasions are marked on dedicated dates. 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day, for example, while November is UK Disability History Month. Each named day or month draws attention to matters of national and international importance, with the calendar year as a whole reflecting diverse cultures, identities, challenges, and causes for celebration.

Visitors attending the exhibition will be able to journey chronologically through a calendar year of postgraduate research, and discover the innovative projects of UoB postgraduate researchers and how they link up to the changing seasons, sginificant dates, and cultural periods.

All UoB staff and students are warmly invited to visit the exhibition between 10am-4pm, 29 November and 4 December 2023. No prior booking is necessary.

UoB staff and students can also join the exhibition launch! On Tuesday 29 November, 5-6.30pm at Westmere House, join the University Graduate School to celebrate the exhibition with wine and nibbles, and the chance to hear from postgraduate researchers taking part in the exhibition. Book your place for the launch here.

For members of the public, we'll be holding a dedicated open day on Monday 4 December, when Westmere House will be open to all, and the exhibition free to enter.

Westmere House is located on Edgbaston Park Road (B15 2RA), and easily found as G15 on the campus map.  Car parking information can be found here. Westmere House and the exhibition are wheelchair accessible and have step-free access.

A virtual version of the exhibition will be available for those who would like to visit remotely.
