Easter Hope in a Fragile World
In the half-light of our times, I sometimes turn on the news and feel a quiet heaviness in my heart. The images are familiar: tensions around Iran, wounded cities in Lebanon, drones crossing the skies of Ukraine, and the growing worry of an economic crisis already affecting many lives. Something feels unsteady, and with it, our sense of security about the future.
So, a simple question comes to me: where is hope in all of this?
It is important to say that Christian hope is not the same as simple optimism. Optimism is based on what we can predict or calculate; it depends on what seems likely. Hope, instead, is something deeper. It is a gift from God. It does not ignore the darkness, but it dares to believe that light is already present, even when we cannot see it.
At Easter, this hope is given a name: the Resurrection. Not just a comforting idea, but a reality that opens a new horizon. It tells us that life is stronger than death, and that something new is already beginning in our world.
I saw this in a very simple and concrete way when I accompanied twenty-one students on a retreat inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius last March. They came from different Christian traditions, yet they shared the same desire: to search for meaning and to open their hearts to something greater. In their questions, their listening, and even in their silence, I could sense a quiet promise.
Perhaps hope is there: in these young people who are ready to seek, to trust, and to grow. Hope is often quiet. It does not force itself on us. And yet, it is already at work, slowly shaping the future.
In the end, hope is like the blossoming trees on our campus. Only a few months ago, they stood bare, almost lifeless. And now, in the spring light, they burst into bloom with an unexpected beauty. So it is with hope: hidden for a time, patient beneath the surface, until one day it flowers, quietly, but unmistakably, into life.
