From awkward to effective: how to have better conversations

Working with other people isn’t always easy. Maybe you’re the kind of person who prefers getting things done alone, or maybe you’ve been in one too many group tasks where the discussion circles endlessly with no real progress. Whether you’re navigating seminars, group projects, or preparing for the workplace, knowing how to have effective conversations is a skill that makes everything smoother.

That’s where our UoB Xtra skills training session comes in:

From awkward to effective: how to have better conversations
Thursday 18 June 2026
9:30am - 12:30pm
Room UG05, Murray Learning Centre

This fast‑paced, interactive workshop gives you simple, practical tools you can use straight away to build confidence. No heavy theory, no long lectures – just engaging activities that help you understand how conversations work and how you can guide them more effectively.

You’ll learn how to use peer‑to‑peer coaching techniques to encourage critical thinking, reflective practice, and genuine collaboration. By the end, you’ll know how to challenge assumptions, ask powerful questions, and create space for better ideas to emerge. It’s the kind of learning that sticks, because you’ll be applying it in real time.

This session is open to students from all subjects and disciplines – if you need to work with others (and let’s be honest, you most certainly will do!), then you’ll benefit from it.
