Blog: My study abroad adventures in Vancouver

In this blog final year student Carys, talks about her adventures in Vancouver all thanks to UoB's Go Global study abroad programme.

Written by Carys Davies, BSc psychology student

I have just returned from an amazing year studying abroad at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. My Go Global Summer in South Korea the previous year sparked a passion for travelling, so the chance to live and study in a new country for a full year seemed like the perfect opportunity!

Why Canada?

Choosing a country and institution for my year abroad was really tough- there are so many options to choose from! In the end, I decided to follow my heart and select Canada as it had always been a dream of mine to visit. Vancouver in particular has a unique combination of forests, ocean, beach and mountains, all whilst being in a city- the idea of being surrounded by so much nature really appealed to me. There’s also no language barrier to worry about!

Life at UBC

Studying at UBC was very different to Birmingham- I had a busier timetable and frequent midterm exams. However, I actually found myself enjoying the learning aspect of my year abroad despite the heavier workload! I took a broad range of courses that introduced me to new topics and careers in psychology- I have discovered an interest in health psychology which has changed my future career choices. My fellow students and professors brought a new Canadian perspective to my understanding of psychology and taught me about the complex history of Indigenous populations in Canada, making me more culturally aware as a psychologist. My classes have enabled me to make lasting friendships, network internationally with inspiring researchers, and explore the huge variety of study cafes and libraries UBC had to offer! Outside of my classes, I made the most of my opportunity to explore Vancouver. UBC had so much to do just on the campus itself- we were never bored! It had a botanical garden, beach, a beautiful rose garden, amazing sports facilities, and its own museum! There was always an ice hockey, basketball or American football game to watch.

My favourite place in Vancouver was Kitsilano beach, going on relaxing walks with sea views and having picnics with friends. Another highlight was Stanley Park, a peaceful escape from the busy city. Downtown Vancouver and Granville Island had so many shops and restaurants, and North Vancouver offered stunning hiking trails. One of my favourite moments was snowshoeing up Cypress Mountain- I was nervous as I had never been hiking before, let alone in the snow! But it turned out to be an amazing trip I will never forget.

Top Tips for a Year Abroad

Stay organised and check your emails! Studying abroad includes lots of paperwork, deadlines, appointments and emails and it can be hard to stay on track sometimes- I found setting reminders and keeping an organised inbox really helped me. Budgeting is key- especially in Canada, where I was caught out by added tax at the check-out a few times. Make sure you research the cost of living beforehand, and set a weekly budget. Ask for help when you need it! Adapting to a new country is challenging, and problems will arise. There are many people who can help- I found reaching out to my family and the Go Global team for support was essential for settling in at first. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. I tried so many new things, like hiking, Thanksgiving and Chinese lantern making! I was nervous at first but I made so many new friends and memories I will treasure forever by just going for it! Remember that other people are going to be nervous too!

It’s my dream to return to Vancouver again, it has become a place really special to me. If you’re considering a year abroad- go for it! You definitely won’t regret it and it’s a great way to experience the world.
