Moving out weekend is coming
Moving out weekend is only a few weeks away!
Whilst we'll be sad to see lots of you go back home for the summer, we want to make sure you are fully prepared and don't leave anything important behind.
Every year students move out of their student accommodation, whether that's on/off campus halls of residence or private accomodation in Selly Oak and beyond. However, every year some stuff still gets left behind and that has to go somewhere.
Here are some helpful tips to make sure you take everything you need with you and where you can leave or donate things that won't be going home with you.
Have you heard of Junkbusters?
Have some unwanted items you want to get rid of as they won't be coming home with you? You can donate some of your old things to Junkbusters and raise some money for charity at the same time! In the past three years, Junkbusters has raised £30,000 for charity all with the aim of becoming more sustainable, reducing waste and taking the stress out of move out day!
Not sure how it works? Our Guild Community Wardens set up stalls around Selly Oak for students to come and drop off any donations. All proceeds go towards charities such as the British Heart Foundation and Birmingham Hospice.
You can donate clothes (including fancy dress outfits!), books, ornaments, decorations and more. However, there are a few things that Junkbusters does not accept: duvets, pillows, broken or dirty items, knives, hangers, food, bikes or helmets. If you want to drop off an electrical item, then the weekend dates (28th and 29th June) are when you can do this.
For more information and for all the dates and locations that the team will be at head to the Guild webpages.
What else can I do?
- You can donate lots of bits and bobs that you might not be taking home with you directly to Charity shops. There are lots of them across Selly Oak and Harbourne so you and your housemates may be able to combine your unwanted things and drop them off together.
- Second hand books can be donated closer to home at Winterbourne. The second hand bookstore at Winerbourne accepts donations that you can drop off at reception. If it's more than a few books though, be sure to let them know in advance.
- Your stuff that cannot be donated can be dropped off at the local tip, but we know not everyone has a car and with the ongoing changes to bin collection in the area this may be a very busy option.
Finally, make a list of all your essentials to take home with you! Passport, ID etc. These can be expensive to replace so make sure you pack them in a safe space.
We hope that your moving out process goes well and that you use the options available to you so that you have a cleaner and more organised day.
