World Mental Health Day 2025: Access to support when it matters most

World Mental Health Day reminds us that looking after our mental wellbeing matters every day, but especially when the world feels uncertain.

This year’s theme, Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies, feels especially relevant. Recent events in the UK and around the world remind us that times of crisis and trauma can affect our mental health and challenge our sense of safety and belonging – whether we’re directly impacted or not. They also show how important it is to know where to turn and access support when things feel difficult.

When you’re struggling, it can be hard to know where to start – whether you’re feeling anxious about world events, overwhelmed by studies, homesick, or simply not yourself. But remember, you don’t need to be in crisis for your mental health to matter.

At the University of Birmingham, support is always within reach. Here are some of the ways you can find mental health support and connection, whatever you’re going through:

If you need someone to talk to right now

Whether you’re feeling anxious, low, or unsure what to do next, UBHeard offers 24/7 confidential emotional and mental health support. You can call 0800 917 9379 anytime or connect via live chat and video on the Wisdom App – ideal if you’re studying away from the UK.

If your challenges are affecting your studies

Your Wellbeing Officer can help you manage how personal difficulties impact your academic life. They can talk things through, help with Extenuating Circumstances if needed, and connect you with other specialist support.

If you’d just like a friendly face and space to talk

Sometimes, an in-person conversation is the best first step. Pause drop-ins at the Wellbeing Lodge (North Gate) offer an informal place to talk things through with trained listeners – no appointment needed.

If you’d like professional therapeutic support

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Service provides short-term therapeutic sessions and can refer you to more specialist care if that feels right for you.

If something has happened that’s left you feeling unsafe or disrespected

The Report + Support platform connects you to trained Responders who can listen confidentially and help you explore your next steps if you’ve experienced harassment, discrimination or other harmful behaviour.

If you’re seeking calm, community, or reflection

The Multifaith Chaplaincy offers a welcoming space for all students of all faiths and none. You can drop in to chat, reflect, or find quiet alongside others. The chaplains are there to listen and provide pastoral support, whatever you’re facing.

If you need urgent mental health help

If you or someone you know is in immediate distress or at risk of harm:

  • Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E for emergency support.
  • If it’s urgent but not life-threatening, call NHS 111 for advice and guidance.
  • You can also contact the Samaritans at 116 123, 24 hours a day, for free confidential listening.
  • Students under 35 can reach Papyrus Hopeline UK on 0800 068 4141 for mental health crisis support.
  • On campus, you can reach Security in an emergency on 0121 414 4444 or via the Safezone app.

You’re not alone and we can help once we know

Reaching out is never a sign of weakness; it’s the first and most important step towards feeling better. Even if you’re not sure what kind of support you need, simply letting someone know you’re struggling can make a difference.

At UoB, we’re committed to supporting every student through whatever challenges they face. But we can only offer help once we know what’s going on. If something is affecting your wellbeing or your studies, please reach out to your Wellbeing Officer, or speak to one of the services above. They’ll listen, offer guidance, and connect you with the right support for your situation.

No matter what you’re going through, you don’t have to face it alone. Help is here, and it starts with a conversation.
