Your arrival essentials

It’s time to get excited! If you’re reading this page, it means you’re at the beginning of your student accommodation journey. We can’t wait to welcome you to our thriving student community and your new home very soon.

There are a few things you need to know before you pack your bags and look forward to life at University of Birmingham.

Book your arrival timeslot

If you’re arriving in September, you'll be able to book a timeslot to move in during Arrivals Weekend (Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September) after you've booked your room and completed your accommodation pass. Keep an eye on your inbox from Thursday 11 September.

We use timeslots to help us know when you're due to arrive on campus; don't worry if you arrive outside of these times or dates, you'll still be above to move in.

You can book a timeslot as soon as you've completed the Accommodation Pass – your induction to all things student accommodation at University of Birmingham. This is an essential part of your University induction, so please ensure you complete it before you arrive.

Checking into your accommodation

Once you’ve arrived on campus, it’s time to check in. Your student ID card is your room key. If you have yours, you can go straight to your room.

Any student who does not have an ID card, will need to collect a temporary access card from one of the 24/7 receptions. Remember to bring your photo ID with you.

  • The Vale Village – Shackleton reception (B15 3SX)
  • Pritchatts Park Village – Pritchatts House reception (B15 2QX
  • Selly Oak Village – Jarratt Hall reception (B29 6FQ)

All receptions are open 24/7. If one of our friendly team members isn't at the desk, please give them a call:

  • The Vale Village – 0121 415 8520
  • Pritchatts Park Village – 0121 414 9022
  • Selly Oak Village – 0121 415 1011

Don't forget to bring photo ID and your student number with you; we can’t give you your access card or room keys without it. Proof of booking is also helpful.

Getting your permanent student ID card

UK students without a permanent student ID card can drop-in to the Welcome Registration Hub (marquee next to Main Library). You do not need an appointment. Remember to bring your photo ID with you.
New international students who require a visa to study in the UK must complete a simple Right to Study check. You will start the process online, using  My Right to Study, and complete the process at an in-person appointment in the Welcome Registration Hub (marquee next to Main Library). Appointments are available from Saturday 20 September – Friday 3 October. Once you have completed your Right to Study check, you will receive your student ID card.

What to pack

Treat moving to university as a long holiday; only pack the things you really need, plus a few things that will help you feel at home (some of your favourite books, photos, etc.). Visit our ‘What to pack’ page for more information.

Before you do anything, see what’s already included in your room and flat by checking out your accommodation inventory today.

You can also buy lots of student essentials through UniKitOut, using the discount code BHAM10. We've partnered with the team to ensure all kitchen, bedding and bathroom items you need are available to buy and be delivered.

What not to pack

Please do not pack:

  • Kettles, toasters, or other small kitchen items – it’s better to buy as a flat when you arrive
  • A doorstop – your room and kitchen doors are fire doors and should not be propped open
  • Candles – these pose a huge fire risk and are not allowed in your accommodation
  • Illegal substance of any kind
  • Dangerous weapons
  • Your pet

As parking at our villages is extremely limited, we do not recommend bringing your car with you. A limited number of spaces are reserved for Blue Badge and permit holders. Find out more through our ‘Contracts, inventories, and facilities’ page.

A big Birmingham Welcome

To welcome you to your new home, you'll receive a welcome pack in your room on arrival, plus an in-person visit from our Welcome team during your first few weeks with us. Your accommodation's Residence Life Assistants will also be available to help you settle in, hosting events to help you meet new people and make new friends.

Get vaccinated

New students are considered to be at risk of meningitis and septicaemia (also called sepsis or blood poisoning). We therefore encourage you to check that your MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and MenACWY vaccinations are up to date. You can do this by contacting your doctor.

If you haven’t received either vaccine, we strongly recommend that you get vaccinated a few weeks before you arrive on campus.

If you’re an international student, you can request to be vaccinated as soon as you’ve registered with a GP in the UK.

Find your people

Get to know your neighbours with free activities and socials run by our Residence Life event assistants. Find out what they have planned over on the Guild of Students' website. The team will also be on hand to help you settle in in your first few weeks, along with wellbeing assistants who can provide peer support on all aspects of university life.

We'll also share the best things to do in your halls in our monthly Student Living newsletter. You can also stay in the know by following Student Living on Instagram.

You can connect with your future flatmates before you arrive through Unibuddy, an online community where students can find out more about university life and chat to their peers.

This page will be revised before every main arrivals period. Last revised: 20 August 2025.
