ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a persistent identifier (PID) for individual researchers.

Benefits for researchers include:

• Author disambiguation: each researcher has a single, unique ORCID (like an ISBN for a book) - this can help to disambiguate authors with common names, or provide continuity where names or institutions have changed.  
• Public profile: each ORCID generates a profile, which the researcher can choose to make openly visible. This profile can showcase your publications and employment history, as well as peer review activity, funding awards, memberships and services, and invited positions and distinctions.
• Interoperability: ORCID makes use of APIs - these provide the "plumbing" between the different systems in the research landscape, such as publishers, research funders and institutions. If a researcher enables APIs between systems, this triggers automatic cross-populating and updating, decreasing the need for re-keying information.

Connect to ORCID

University of Birmingham researchers: set up your ORCID profile using Pure or link your existing profile (to Pure). Access to Pure is available to all academic staff and research students.

Taught students and alumni: you do not have access to Pure, but you can create an ORCID profile directly.

Once your ORCID and Pure are linked, you can grant Pure permission to export content direct to ORCID. This means the following data on your ORCID profile will be kept up to date:

• Institutional organisational affiliation.
• Other personal identifiers (e.g. Scopus author ID, Researcher ID).
• Your research outputs if they meet certain criteria.
