The Chief Scientist Office (CSO) open access policy and Standard Conditions of Grant (for project and all personal awards) requires researchers to make the papers published as a result of CSO funded research publicly available open access.
The policy applies to all peer-reviewed research articles, including reviews not commissioned by publishers, submitted for publication on or after 1 June 2022 than arise from CSO grants and CSO fellowships.
How do I comply?
All articles that acknowledge CSO as a funder should be published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (CC BY).
Electronic copies of articles covered by their policy must be made available through Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) without embargoes.
Publishing open access in a journal or publishing platform
Authors are recommended to publish in a journal fully covered by one of our existing publisher agreements.
Use our search tool to check if a particular journal is covered.
If your chosen journal is not covered by an agreement, CSO will support open access publishing by reimbursing funds to cover article processing charges (APCs).
Funding is capped at £8,000 per standard CSO Grant or Fellowship and must be requested within 18 months of the award’s financial reconciliation.
Peer-reviewed articles funded by CSO Grants and Fellowships must acknowledge CSO using their unique award identifier in the funding or acknowledgement section.
